Firm fined 50k for underpaying worker

An Arizona man was charged with stealing at least 60,000 dollars from a co-worker and another co-worker's wife with an underpayment fee of up to $30. He was sentenced last week to two years probation.

Eric Johnson, 30, was indicted in the case Tuesday for theft and conspiracy. He's facing up to three years in prison if convicted.

According to court documents, Johnson went to an on-call security desk at a local company the day after a call to a 911 emergency, where his co-worker said she had heard a person in the call was in her house. When Johnson arrived, he discovered that the call ended with the caller telling him that she'd be staying in his house for a while and they could stay later, if they wanted, so the co-worker could go to the bathroom.

The investigation also noted that Johnson agreed that he could take a day off work by calling the company and then returning to his house.

That's when a co-worker showed up. The co-worker told her boyfriend that he was worried about their son, who had been out for a month and was in intensive care. Johnson said he paid the fee to call 911 to tell the co-worker that their son was ok, but when he returned and found out the call had been dropped and had not been received by the family, he tried to claim a $30 penalty fee for going through the hassle of calling, according to court documents.

The woman's son was dead by the time police arrived and a crime scene was soon cleared.

At the time of his arraignment, Johnson was in good standing with the state. He was a licensed appraiser with the Arizona Board of Licensed Appraisers and a registered financial planner, according to documents obtained by 9NEWS and KAPO. The Arizona Division of Consumer Services says Johnson has also been licensed to practice financial planning and a registered financial advisor for several years.

Arizona is among a few states that have higher fines for on-call violations than for regular criminal arrests, said Lisa J. Kline, spokeswoman for the Arizona Division of Consumer Services.

"Most times we are not concerned with a person who was making a decision of how to use their own money after hours and not being paid," Kline said. "But we can tell you that if an employee decides that he or she may call 911 for a child, you should not hesitate to call and demand payment from the phone company."

Kline also added that it's a misdemeanor to commit this kind of behavior.

Criminal charges are a third degree felony and can bring up to 10 years in prison. The fine is based on the price for calling 91

The newspaper says that on Monday, when the murderer arrived at "Journalist Politkovskaya", he met with the editor there, Andrey Kiselyov, then a student. He has been working there since 2006.

The paper also states that in the early morning of Monday, May 26, Kiselyov left the office and got into a taxi at 7am. He drove up to a house in the area, then returned at 6am.

According to the newspaper: "The murderer's friend, Vyacheslav Fennikovsky, came to the house to meet him. At around 7pm, the killer left the house to pick up what appeared to be a gun and took off in the taxi he bought. The killer, who appeared to be in his late 50s, then stopped the taxi and got into it, walking out of the apartment at 6am."

According to the newspaper, the killer returned to the house at 8pm, taking with him four women, who were later "killed" at the hands of the journalist and the taxi driver.

They also state that "at approximately 8:30am the killer called his father at the apartment. During the conversation, Fennikovsky confirmed that the killer planned to go to Ukraine to commit a crime, but that he had left the premises beforehand. He said the killer told him they were going to meet at the local police station but they should have left earlier and gone to the police station at 9am."

The murder of journalist and activist Andrey Kiselyov, on April 2, is believed to be the most notorious and vicious act carried out on Ukrainian soil in 2016. Kiselyov was shot dead in front of the media building of the opposition-controlled Donetsk Regional Assembly at 7:03 in the morning - not far from the scene of the presidential election that year.

On April 12, the newspaper Zavtra published an article that confirmed that the murderer, Fennikovsky, had been murdered while on his own.
